The CEO of Alphabet/Google is Sundar Pichai, while Demis Hassabis leads Google DeepMind. Google was founded in 1998, and DeepMind was founded in 2010 and acquired by Google in 2014. What makes them different

Google has the broadest AI product portfolio of any company. No other company offers a chatbot, video generator, music generator, image generator, coding agent, browser automation agent, scientific discovery tools, open source models, AND deep ecosystem integrations all under one roof. Google also has the deepest integration with daily computing. AI is embedded directly in Android, Chrome, Gmail, Docs, Drive, YouTube, Maps, Photos, Calendar, Meet, and Search. If you live in the Google ecosystem, the AI features are everywhere without needing separate apps. Gemini offers the largest context window in the industry. The 1M token context window (available on the Pro tier) can process approximately 1,500 pages of text or 11 hours of audio in a single prompt, far exceeding competitors. Google has made strong open source contributions. Gemma models are competitive open weight LLMs, and AlphaFold is one of the most impactful scientific AI contributions in history. The jack of all trades criticism applies: Google covers more ground than anyone but individual products sometimes lack the focus and polish of competitors. Writing quality is generally considered a step behind Claude, and general chat polish is a step behind ChatGPT. The breadth is both a strength and a weakness. In video generation, Veo 3/3.1 with native audio generation (dialogue, sound effects, ambient sound synchronized to visuals) is arguably the most capable video generation system available.
