What are Custom AI Personas?
Custom personas (called "GPTs" or "Gems" depending on the tool) are specialized versions of the AI that you configure for a specific purpose. You define a persona's instructions, personality, knowledge base, and capabilities once, then reuse it whenever you need that particular type of help. You can also browse and use personas created by other users. It is like having a team of specialized assistants instead of one general purpose chatbot.
Common use cases- Creating a writing assistant tuned to your brand voice and style guidelines
- Building a subject matter expert that has your company's documentation preloaded
- Sharing a custom persona with your team so everyone gets consistent, specialized help
Open Gem builder
Go to gemini.google.com, click "Explore Gems," then "New Gem"
Define the persona
Name your Gem and write instructions covering role, task, behavior, and output format
Upload reference files
Give the Gem background knowledge and reference materials
Test and save
Preview responses in the test window, refine instructions, then save
Share with teammates
Send a link with view or edit access; also available in the Workspace side panel
