The Browser Company

Overview

The Browser Company was founded in 2019 by Josh Miller (formerly at the White House Office of Digital Strategy) with the mission to build a better way to use the internet. The company first gained attention with Arc, a redesigned Chromium browser that introduced Spaces, Boosts, and a sidebar first interface. Arc became a cult favorite among designers, developers, and productivity enthusiasts. In 2025, the company pivoted from Arc to Dia, an AI native browser built from the ground up with artificial intelligence at the core of the browsing experience. Unlike Arc (which added AI features to a traditional browser), Dia treats AI as the fundamental interaction model. Users can chat with their tabs, teach the browser custom Skills, and rely on Memory that learns their preferences over time. Atlassian acquired The Browser Company for approximately $610 million in September/October 2025, making it one of the largest AI browser acquisitions. The team continues to develop Dia under the Atlassian umbrella, and Arc remains available for existing users.

What makes them different

The Browser Company is one of only a few teams that has shipped two distinct browser products. Arc proved that a small team could reimagine browser UX and build a passionate user base. Dia takes the lessons from Arc and applies them to an AI first paradigm. Unlike Comet (which integrates Perplexity search into browsing) or Chrome (which is adding Gemini features incrementally), Dia was designed from day one as an AI collaboration tool. Skills let users teach the browser repeatable tasks (like "summarize this article in three bullet points and email it to my team"), and Memory lets the browser learn individual preferences without explicit configuration. The Atlassian acquisition gives The Browser Company significant resources and distribution, while Atlassian gains a consumer AI product and a world class browser engineering team.
