Rork
Founded 2024
AI app builder backed by a16z that lets anyone create real mobile apps for iPhone and Android by describing them in plain English.
Overview
Rork is a San Francisco based startup that builds the leading AI mobile app builder. Founded in 2024 by Daniel Dhawan (CEO, age 27) and Levan Kvirkvelia (CTO, age 25), the company raised $2.8 million in seed funding from a16z Speedrun (Andreessen Horowitz's early stage program led by Andrew Chen). Other investors include Hustle Fund, ChapterOne, Founders Inc., and notable angels like Expo co founders Charlie Cheever and Evan Bacon. Rork went viral in February 2025 after a tweet about the product reached over 1 million views, generating $100,000 in revenue within 5 days and reaching $550,000 ARR within 2 months. The company crossed 1 million apps built by users in under a year. The team is small (around 4 people as of early 2026) and Daniel Dhawan is a serial bootstrapper who built hit mobile apps starting in his teens. Levan Kvirkvelia previously co founded Jig Analytics and co created 21st.dev (50,000 users, 3,000 GitHub stars). Rork's mission is to make mobile app development accessible to everyone. Their flagship product lets users build real native mobile apps (using React Native/Expo) from text descriptions, test on real devices via QR code, and publish to the App Store. Rork Max, launched in 2026, extended this to native Swift development for every Apple platform including Apple Watch and Vision Pro.
What makes them different
Compared to Bolt.new, Lovable, and v0, Rork is specifically focused on native mobile apps rather than web applications. While those tools generate excellent web apps, they cannot build apps that run natively on iPhone and Android or publish to the App Store. Rork is the only major AI builder that does. Compared to FlutterFlow, which also targets mobile app building, Rork uses AI generation from natural language rather than a visual drag and drop editor. This makes Rork faster for initial prototyping but gives less fine grained visual control. Compared to Cursor and Claude Code, which are general purpose coding tools, Rork is purpose built for mobile app creation. A non technical user can build and publish a mobile app with Rork without knowing any programming, while Cursor and Claude Code require development experience. Rork Max is unique in the market: no other AI tool generates native Swift code for every Apple platform (iPhone, iPad, Watch, TV, Vision Pro) from a web browser. The cloud Mac infrastructure that makes this possible is a significant engineering achievement. The credit based pricing model is distinctive. While competitors charge monthly subscriptions with unlimited usage, Rork charges per AI interaction (one credit per prompt). This can be more affordable for light users but more expensive for heavy iterators.
