n8n (short for 'nodemation') is a workflow automation company founded by Jan Oberhauser in Berlin in 2019. The company builds an automation platform that bridges the gap between no code visual builders (like Zapier) and full code scripting, giving technical teams the flexibility of code with the speed of drag and drop. n8n has raised approximately $240 million in total funding, including a $180 million Series C in October 2025 led by Accel with participation from Sequoia, NVIDIA Ventures, Redpoint, and others. What makes them different

Compared to Zapier, n8n charges per workflow execution rather than per task/step. A complex 50 step workflow counts as 1 execution in n8n versus 50 tasks in Zapier, making n8n dramatically cheaper for complex automations. n8n also offers full JavaScript and Python support within workflows, self hosting with unlimited executions for free, and significantly more advanced AI agent capabilities via LangChain integration. Compared to Make (Integromat), n8n offers deeper code integration (npm packages, Python, cURL import), a self hosted option, and more mature AI agent workflows. Make has more native integrations (2,500+ vs 400+) and a lower entry price for cloud plans. Compared to traditional iPaaS platforms, n8n is developer friendly rather than business user oriented. The visual builder is powerful, but the platform assumes you are comfortable with APIs, JSON, and basic programming concepts. This makes it less accessible to non technical users but far more capable for technical teams. Unique strengths include the free self hosted Community Edition with unlimited executions, execution based pricing that rewards complex workflows, LangChain native AI agent capabilities with 70+ AI nodes, the ability to use any n8n workflow as a custom AI tool, and MCP server/client support for AI agent integration.
