Overview

Meta Platforms (formerly Facebook) is one of the world's largest technology companies, known for its social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Threads) and its investment in the metaverse and AI. On the AI front, Meta has been a major contributor to open source AI through its Llama family of large language models, which have become some of the most widely used open weight models globally. In late December 2025, Meta acquired Manus AI for over $2 billion, marking one of the largest AI acquisitions in history. The acquisition of Manus adds autonomous agent capabilities that go beyond what Meta AI could do on its own. While Google and OpenAI build agents within their existing ecosystems, Meta now has a standalone agent platform that works across the entire web. Meta also has the advantage of distribution: with billions of users across Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, any AI product they launch has immediate access to a massive audience. Their open source commitment with Llama has earned them goodwill in the developer community that proprietary competitors lack.
