Overview

Anthropic is an AI safety company founded in 2021 by Dario Amodei (CEO) and Daniela Amodei (President), both former OpenAI executives, along with several other ex-OpenAI researchers. The company's mission is to build reliable, interpretable, and steerable AI systems. Anthropic is currently the innovation leader in AI, particularly in coding and agentic AI, and is widely regarded as producing the most capable models for reasoning, writing, and software engineering. Headquartered in San Francisco, Anthropic has raised over $40 billion in total funding. In February 2026, the company closed a $30 billion Series G round at a $380 billion post-money valuation, led by GIC and Coatue. Prior to that, the September 2025 Series F raised $13 billion at a $183 billion valuation. Annual revenue reached $3 billion by mid 2025. Anthropic's product lineup includes Claude (the AI assistant available via web and mobile apps), Claude Code (an agentic CLI coding tool), the Claude API (a developer platform), Claude for Enterprise, Claude Cowork (a desktop file agent in research preview), and the Model Context Protocol (MCP), an open standard for AI tool integration. The current model lineup features Claude Opus 4.6 as the flagship model ($5/$25 per million tokens, 200K context window with 1M beta, 128K max output), Claude Sonnet 4.6 ($3/$15 per million tokens, 200K context with 1M beta, 64K max output), and Claude Haiku 4.5 ($1/$5 per million tokens, 200K context, 64K max output). Legacy models include Claude Opus 4.5, Sonnet 4.5, Opus 4.1, Sonnet 4, and Opus 4.

What makes them different

Compared to OpenAI (ChatGPT/GPT series), Claude consistently outperforms on long form writing quality, nuanced reasoning, and following complex multi-step instructions. Claude Code is widely considered the most advanced agentic coding tool available, operating directly on your actual filesystem rather than in a sandbox. Anthropic's approach to safety (Constitutional AI) is more transparent and research-driven. The Model Context Protocol (MCP) has become an industry standard for connecting AI to external tools. Compared to Google (Gemini), while Gemini has advantages in multimodal integration with Google's ecosystem, Claude excels in reasoning depth, writing quality, and developer tooling. Claude Code has no direct equivalent in Google's product line. Anthropic's models are more consistent and less prone to hallucination on complex tasks. Compared to competitors in coding (Cursor, Windsurf, GitHub Copilot), Claude Code takes a fundamentally different approach: it is an autonomous agent running in your terminal with full file system access, not an IDE autocomplete tool. It can plan, execute, test, and iterate across entire codebases. Other tools like Cursor and Copilot are IDE extensions that augment your editing; Claude Code replaces the need to manually write code for many tasks entirely.
