Best For

Knowledge workers who want an AI system that completes entire workflows (research, analysis, report generation, email delivery) from a single prompt

Verdict

Routes tasks across 19 AI models including Claude, GPT-5.2, and Gemini, picking the best model for each subtask rather than being locked to one provider

What it does

Multi Model Orchestration

Routes subtasks across 19 AI models (Claude Opus 4.6, GPT-5.2, Gemini, Grok, Nano Banana for images, Veo 3.1 for video, and more), picking the best model for each part of the job. You can also override the router and pin specific subtasks to specific models.

Autonomous Task Execution

Give it a high level goal and Computer plans the entire workflow, breaks it into a dependency graph of subtasks, spawns specialized sub agents, and executes everything without further input. Delivers finished artifacts like reports, spreadsheets, deployed apps, and emails.

Search Native Intelligence

Built on Perplexity's search and retrieval infrastructure, so every task has access to accurate, cited, real time web information. Research tasks are grounded in actual sources, not just model knowledge.

Learn more

Asynchronous Background Execution

Tasks run in the cloud while you are away. Supports scheduled jobs, condition based triggers, and proactive actions like morning briefings and deadline reminders. Some workflows can run for weeks or months.

Learn more

Web Browsing and Automation

Navigates pages, fills forms, extracts structured data, and handles multi step web workflows in an isolated cloud browser. No access to your local machine.

Code Generation and Deployment

Can research APIs, design architecture, write code, deploy applications, and set up data pipelines. Executes code in isolated sandboxes with real file systems.

Learn more

Rich Media Generation

Creates images (via Nano Banana) and video (via Veo 3.1) as part of larger workflows. Can produce presentations, design assets, and multimedia reports.

Hundreds of Connectors

Authenticated integrations with Gmail, Outlook, GitHub, Linear, Slack, Notion, Google Drive, Jira, Confluence, Snowflake, Databricks, Salesforce, FactSet, and hundreds more via MCP (Model Context Protocol).

Persistent Memory

Retains context across sessions and platforms. Learns your preferences and working patterns over time to improve future task execution.

Human in the Loop Safety

Requires explicit user approval before irreversible actions like publishing, pushing code, sending emails, or financial transactions. Tasks run in isolated cloud sandboxes with scoped credentials and auditable logs.

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Routes tasks across 19 AI models including Claude, GPT-5.2, and Gemini, picking the best model for each subtask rather than being locked to one provider
  • Built on Perplexity's search infrastructure, so research tasks are grounded in real, cited web sources rather than relying solely on model knowledge
  • Asynchronous execution means tasks continue in the cloud while you are away, with notifications when complete or when input is needed
  • Hundreds of authenticated connectors (Gmail, Slack, Notion, GitHub, Salesforce, etc.) let it work across your entire tool stack
  • Isolated cloud sandboxes for each task prevent any risk to your local machine, with scoped credentials and auditable logs
  • Regular Perplexity searches remain unlimited and do not consume credits, so you only pay for Computer tasks

Cons

  • Requires the Max subscription at $200/month; not available on the Pro plan ($20/month) yet, making it one of the most expensive AI subscriptions
  • Credit based consumption can be unpredictable; complex tasks that use expensive models burn through credits faster, and unused monthly credits do not roll over
  • Web desktop only at launch. No mobile support yet, limiting on the go usage
  • Cannot control your local desktop or interact with local applications and files directly; everything runs in cloud sandboxes
  • Each chained step in a complex workflow compounds the risk of errors corrupting downstream outputs; Perplexity recommends treating high stakes outputs as drafts
  • BrowseSafe (the prompt injection detection model) was found by independent researchers to incorrectly classify 36% of simple malicious attacks as safe
  • No API access for Computer itself (the Sonar API is a separate product for Perplexity Search), so you cannot build on top of it programmatically

How to get started

1

Subscribe to Perplexity Max

Computer requires a Max subscription ($200/month). Go to perplexity.ai and upgrade your account. You receive 10,000 monthly credits plus a limited time launch bonus of 20,000 extra credits.

2

Start your first task

Go to the Home page, click the Computer icon, and use the "Start a task" field. Describe what you want done in natural language. Be specific about the desired output. For example: "Research the top 5 CRM tools for small businesses, compare pricing and features, and create a Google Sheet with the results."

3

Connect your tools

Open the Computer panel and browse available connectors. Enable the apps you use (Gmail, Slack, Notion, Google Drive, GitHub, etc.) so Computer can read from and write to your existing tools.

4

Watch it work

You can monitor task progress in real time or leave and come back later. Computer runs in the background and notifies you when tasks are complete, when it needs your approval for sensitive actions, or when credits are running low.

5

Set up recurring tasks

For ongoing workflows (weekly competitive reports, daily news digests, monthly market analysis), set up scheduled tasks that run automatically on your chosen cadence. These consume credits each time they execute.
