5 hrs
Rolling usage window
All plans use a 5 hour rolling window. When you send your first message, the window starts. It resets when you message again after the 5 hours lapse.
Step 1: Window starts
When you send your first message, a 5 hour window begins
Step 2: Messages draw from pool
All messages during that window draw from your plan's quota
Step 3: Window resets
The window resets when you send your next message after the 5 hours lapse
Step 4: Model matters
Using Opus consumes more of your quota than Haiku or Sonnet

Why are these numbers approximate?
Your actual message count depends on how long each conversation is. Longer conversations use more processing capacity per message, so a fresh conversation gets more messages than one that has been going for a while. Switching to a lighter model like Sonnet or Haiku also stretches your quota further.

Tips for managing usage
- Use the right model for the task: Sonnet for most everyday tasks, Opus for complex reasoning and high stakes work.
- Combine questions into single messages instead of sending many short messages.
- Store frequently referenced documents in Projects instead of re uploading them every conversation.
- Plan intensive work around your 5 hour windows.
- Start new conversations for new topics to minimize context window size.
- Consider Max 5x ($100/mo) if you regularly hit limits on Pro.
